Gynaecologist Fails to Inform Patient
Yet Another Sad Case
I recently saw in my Clinic another sad case; a lady who had fibroids. She had been suffering for 3 years with anaemia due to heavy periods, bloating and compression syndrome in the pelvis. She had had one blood transfusion. The only therapy offered to her were temporising drugs like Esmya, which she tried but they didn’t work, or a hysterectomy or myomectomy. As she did not want surgery with its relatively high complication rate and other disadvantages, she put up with the situation.
She essentially said that she had suffered three years of misery. At no time did the Gynaecologist, who she saw privately, suggest Embolisation as a possibility for her. She went on to report that she had never left the consulting room without a bill for around £1,000.
Finally, after she found my uterine fibroid embolisation website I was able to perform an Embolisation for her. Within 8 weeks she was completely cured and on follow-up I have been able to establish that her recovery has been sutained. Frankly she is pretty livid with the Gynaecologist but I am afraid this story is all too frequent.
Gynaecologists are supposed to fully inform their patients about Embolisation (sadly some of them give misinformation) even though Fibroid Embolisation is recommended by NICE, The American College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, The British College of Obstetrics & Gynaecology and The Royal College of Radiology.
